Who Can Take Classes?

Our classes are open to all adult American citizens (18 or older) of good character who are free from criminal convictions. While we acknowledge that minors should know gun safety, gun responsibility and the use of firearms, it remains our policy (as it has been for over 20 years) that we teach the parents and the parents teach the kids.

We require proof of clean criminal history for most of our courses and this requirement is listed in each course description. We do not require background checks for for our entry level Handgun Safety Seminar, Fundamentals of Home Defense, Level 1 Rifle or Defensive Shotgun. Students in those classes must sign a statement attesting that they are not prohibited from possessing firearms. The proof of clean criminal history is satisfied by showing the class instructor a valid state-issued concealed carry license or other state-issued firearms permit, or other professional license which is not issued without a criminal history check. There several good reasons for this requirement. First, our students should know that they do not have to share range time in a class with convicted felons. Secondly, the material we teach in our advanced level classes should not be taught to convicted criminals.

If you are under court order to attend a gun safety class these prohibitions will prevent your participation in any Firearms Academy classes. In our experience, a student attending a course to fulfill a court order does not have the kind of motivation best suited to the overall class learning experience that we work hard to provide. Thus, for the integrity of the entire program, we do not allow anyone who is under court order to attend a Handgun Safety Seminar or other Firearms Academy program. If we find out that you have been ordered by a court to attend a class, we will revoke your certificate of completion, and advise your judge that you attended this class under false pretenses. There are many other instructors and training organizations who will be happy to help you fulfill court-ordered training.
