Marc “Animal” MacYoung’s
KNIFE DEFENSE SEMINAR

Saturday April 18, 2009 . . . 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Tuition: $225

A one-day seminar focused on non-traditional, rational self defense skills

Like guns, knives are lethal force instruments. Unlike guns, knives do not create the shock to your assailant's nervous system that helps stop the threat. Therefore it often appears that the defender used excessive force to stop an attack. This class examines how to use a knife in self-defense that will both ensure your safety and is most defensible in court. It also addresses the psycho-physiological changes humans undergo under adrenal stress and the strategies to avoid using excessive force if you need to defend yourself with a knife.

MacYoung explains that something is often overlooked in a lot of training. When you are in a situation that you are legally justified to use lethal force, someone else is trying to kill you. Having been in self-defense situations where he had to use guns and knives, MacYoung emphasizes tactics that truly are defensive. Trading damage with an attacker is not something he is interested in teaching. His training emphasizes neutralizing the immediate threat to give you time to act to stop further attacks.

MacYoung knows that survival is a matter of knowledge and awareness. Without those, you won’t make it out of a dark and deserted parking lot. Hand-to-hand combat is a last ditch effort when other, more effective, preventive measures have failed. In this one-day seminar, he teaches skills for use when avoidance has failed and face someone armed with a knife.

About the instructor: Since the age of ten, MacYoung has studied several styles of martial arts, including Karate, Wing Chun, Baqua/Hsing-I, Southern Shaolin, Boxing, Western swordsmanship, Kali and Pentjak Silat. He has field-stripped and bastardized every style he studied in order to make it street effective. Among his other titles he holds the rank of Guru Muda in both Kali No Zelih kali and Gerakan Suci Penjak Silat. However, out of respect to his teachers and their styles, he doesn’t claim to teach anything other than the system he created, Applied Self-Defense, a combat system that draws from all of those arts, but focuses on only one thing: survival.

Growing up on the gang-infested streets of Los Angeles not only gave Marc “Animal” MacYoung his nickname, but extensive firsthand experience about what does and does not work in self-defense. His lifestyle and profession have always put him in danger. Intermixed with his occupational hazards came the perils of living in some of the worst areas in Los Angeles and the problems arising from going head-to-head with local gangs, drug addicts, abusive husbands, thugs and bikers.

MacYoung’s philosophy and thoughts on self defense are well encapsulated on his extensive website http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/ Many of you have already read his website and learned from him there; now you have the opportunity for first-hand instruction from Marc MacYoung.
