Erick Gelhaus 2-Day Shotgun Course

After reviewing nomenclature and relevant modifications, this law enforcement-centric class focuses on using the shotgun within practical and Constitutional confines. The curriculum covers manipulating the weapon, loading & unloading, single and multiple threat engagements, use of cover, close-range engagements, single projectile considerations, working around vehicles, as well as understanding and accepting the platform's limitations when encountering those believed to be armed and violent.

EXPECTATIONS AND OUTCOMES

Upon completing this course, the student will have the skills to employ the shotgun when dealing with armed and violent subjects if found on foot, in a structure, or around a vehicle.

DOCUMENTATION / REQUIREMENTS

Experience working within the Four Safety Rules and not hazarding the shooter next to you. Additionally, you need to be able to load, unload, and clear any commo stoppages with your shotgun. This is not an introductory class.

Range Fees: $40 a day, payable to the host range

EQUIPMENT

  • 14" to 21" shotgun w/sling, visible iron or optical sights, weapon-mounted light
  • Extra ammunition carriers
  • Support equipment, including a handgun with an appropriate holster, two magazines, and pouches;
  • Eye & ear protection
  • Weather-appropriate clothing
  • Optional - elbow & knee pads, soft armor if desired

Ammunition: 

  • 250 birdshot or training 00Buck
  • 35 rounds of defensive 00B
  • 30 slugs
  • 25 rounds of reliable handgun ammunition
  • No Steel Shot

About The Instructor:

In addition to lengthy careers in both the military and law enforcement, Erick's grad school coursework focused on communicating about Use of Force issues. He is a well-published author, with articles appearing in numerous print magazines and several online publications.

Gelhaus has taught the defensive use of firearms and tactics in the private sector – for Gunsite, Aimpoint, and others – to vetted citizens, peace officers, and service members since for more than 20 years.
