Handgun Ballistics & Testing Standards

What kind of self-defense hollow point (HP) ammunition is the best? We believe a good HP that expands well and has enough penetration is the key, regardless of the caliber you choose. At this unique class we’ll test your HP bullet’s accuracy, velocity, penetration, expansion, and weight retention. You’ll get a chance to chronograph your defensive ammunition, and test it through multiple different barriers and testing mediums including: 10% organic ordnance gelatin, Water, Clear Ballistics gelatin, and Meat. Barrier testing through heavy clothing, automotive glass, and steel plates will be included in this course as well. The FBI Ammunition Protocol, and alternative testing theories and methods will be discussed to give you a better understanding of the effectiveness of handgun ammunition.

Do you know the capabilities of your concealed carry handgun if you’re forced to defend your life? You need to be competent with the gun you carry! Many people will compete and practice with a full-size gun, but conceal carry something smaller. If the day comes when you need to use your gun for self-defense, you should have faith in your abilities with your chosen equipment. We’ll test you with multiple high standard shooting drills and qualifications each day to see if your skills with your concealed carry gun is up to the task.

This class is the result of many years of research done and collected by FAS Staff Instructor Chris Harold. He is a strong advocate for training in your carry gear, performance on demand, and knowing the limitations of your skills and equipment.

Notes: Due to the complexity of this class limited spaces are available. Only 1 gun/ammo combination is allowed for testing. While AIWB carry is allowed in this class with prior permission, if we determine you cannot do so safely, you will be asked to switch to a strong side hip holster. Please plan accordingly.
