Precision Rifle

This is a foundational course for shooting the precision rifle with magnified optic out to 600yds.

“An expert marksman is a man who can hit anything he can see- within the effective range of his weapon” - Jeff Cooper

“An expert never forgets the basics” - Universal training, sports performance and coaching mantra

This course is for shooter new to precision long range shooting or has a new gun/optic/ammo combination that they want to bond with. It is for the experienced hunter, competitive shooter, police and military marksman that want to return to the basics and refine their technique and confirm their gun/optic/ammo combination.

A significant amount of time will be spent in the classroom discussing shooting technique, rifle fit, optic set up and capabilities, ammo and external ballistics so that when we are on the range every hole in the target gives us the feedback quickly and efficiently that we need to confirm our technique and rifle/optic/ammo performance. – because the target never lies.

If you haven’t mastered the fundamentals you are wasting your ammo.

You don’t have to be a snake eating commando to take this course. But, the course of fire is shot mostly prone off a bipod or a backpack type rest with some sling supported position shooting in sitting, kneeling and standing. Also, there will be a lot of walking to and from the targets. So, something to consider if you have significant back or neck impairment or reduced mobility.

Course will include:

Establishing a baseline 100yd zero as we work through perfecting technique and debugging equipment

Manual calibration of a DOPE (Data On Previous Engagements) card for your rifle/ammo combination out to 400 yds and use of ballistic calculators to determine and confirm DOPE to 600yds.

Moving targets at walking speed at 100yds

Discussion and introduction to atmospherics that play a role in external ballistics . Theoretical considerations of other factors not available for practical consideration in this course such as shot angle, Coriolis effect, the effect of changing light.

Discussion and introduction to optical physics and how to use your optic as a tool to guide your bullets where you want them to go.

Background check, Current LE or Military ID or CPL required.

Precision Rifle Equipment List

  1. Centerfire rifle capable of 1 MOA accuracy. Suppressors welcomed and encouraged! Muzzle brakes tolerated. Magnum calibers not recommended and discouraged due to the punishing effect of recoil in the prone position and disturbing report in an enclosed firing position especially with a muzzle brake.
  2. High quality Scope of at least 6x magnification with ability to adjust target knobs without a tool. Bring the owners manual as well! Mounted with high quality scope mounts as low to the bore that bolt throw or height of comb will allow.
  3. 400rds of the same type, brand, weight of quality ammunition. The same lot would be best.  Know the ballistic coefficient, sectional density (available on the manufacturers website) . Know the twist rate of your barrel and select the optimal weight bullet.   There is just not enough time in this class to test different bullets. Handloads are allowed and encouraged if you know what you are doing. But again, this is not the time to be working up different loads. Come with 400 of the same rounds.
*Steel cased and steel core ammo not allowed*
  4. Shooting mat. Could be as simple as an ensolite pad or yoga mat. Inflatable camping mats not recommended as they are too wobbly and they will end up popped.
  5. Quality electronic hearing protection worn with an inner ear plug as well. It is not uncommon shooting prone to have the outer ear pro get displaced or gapped. So, you need to have an inner ear plug as well.
  6. Bipod or backpack style shooting rest or sandbag type rest. Once you have determined which works best for you stick with it throughout the course
  7. Some type of rear sand bag for the toe of your stock
  8. 3 ring binder or some type of document folder. Your targets will serve as your data cards from which you will create your own DOPE card. Also, for your shooting summaries and journaling.
  9. Clothing appropriate for weather in Chehalis in early September (usually awesome!)
  10. Your lunch, snack foods, and beverages.
  11. Brimmed hat and shooting glasses
  12. Knee pads recommended, Elbow pads optional
  13. Download a basic ballistic calculator, usually available as a free app or bring a printed ballistic table for your ammo usually available on manufacturers website

Optional Equipment

  • Spotting scope- don’t need to run out and buy one but bring it if you have one.
  • Gun Cleaning equipment- show up with a clean gun and you probably won’t need this.
  • Kestral or similar sophisticated ballistic calculator if you have one
